Addicted to Pornography?

“Allah has decreed for every son of Adam his share of zina, and there is no way to escape from it. The zina of the eye is a glance, the zina of the tongue is speaking and the zina of the mind is wishing and hoping; then the private part either acts upon this or it does not.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Pornography has got its vile grip among many youngsters and adults alike. With the increased ease of access to pornography through internet children too are subjected to this pernicious habit or rather accurately called 'addiction'.

Studies reveal pornography on the long run leads to reduced productivity at work / studies etc, lowers self-esteem. A study from University of Sydney, which is at its preliminary stages,  found that excessive passion for porn increases severe social and relationship problems in an individual. 43% of those surveyed started watching porn between the age of 11 and 13, and 20% of them prefer smut than real intimacy with partners. Smut causes its viewer to disconnect from the society, isolation, and their carnal knowledge is often an imitation of reel than real.

Sins in their nature are addictive, and pornography is sinful in Islam. The visual images you perceive lingers in your mind and triggers your mind to enjoy it. (Not to mention of dopamine, which rather manipulates your mind to prefer pixels over your partner, needs more of the stimulant for the same response over time). Though smut viewer concludes his experience with revulsion and rejection, the re-wired brain and gnawing desires drags him back to the pit hole.

How can you wean yourself from porn?

Porn is a sin that infects your spiritual soul, ultimately leading to self-destruction. You o your laptop, what else can stop you, if not for Taqwah? When thoughts of the pleasure of this heinous sin leading to porn sites or magazines emerge, counter play with your brain; remind yourself of the warnings and advice from the Quran, suppress the inimical pleasure with pains of the fire in hell.

While you muster your will power to bring your odious habit to an end, remember to seek pardon and pray to the Almighty for strength. Establish a strong between you and your Sustainer through regular praying and converse often with him through Quran.

Surround your self with friends who can help in your spiritual uplift and be a consistent reminder of your final destination. Friends online? There are many Muslim alternatives for Social media trying being in one of them. I love Turn To Islam!
